Seven Bank, a major Japanese banking services provider, has launched Face Cash, a new ATM service that enables customers to make deposits and withdrawals using facial recognition technology. The service went live on February 6, and is initially available to customers of Seven Bank and Shizuoka Bank.Face Cash eliminates the need for physical cash cards or smartphones, allowing customers to complete ATM transactions by simply looking into the machine’s camera. This development represents a significant step forward in the adoption of biometric authentication in Japanese banking services.

The launch aligns with a broader trend of biometric innovation in Japan’s financial sector. In recent months, the country has seen several major implementations of facial recognition technology for financial transactions, including Family Mart’s Face Pass system and NEC’s biometric payment system for the upcoming Osaka Kansai Expo 2025.

Seven Bank’s implementation builds upon previous initiatives in the Japanese convenience store sector, where 7-Eleven Japan has already tested facial recognition for cashless payments in partnership with VeriTrans and NEC.

The Face Cash service is currently limited to customers of Seven Bank and Shizuoka Bank, with no announced plans for expansion to other financial institutions. The service is available at Seven Bank’s ATM locations throughout Japan.

The primary goal of Face Cash, according to Jiji Press, is to enhance customer convenience while maintaining security in banking transactions. This initiative reflects the growing adoption of biometric authentication methods by financial institutions to improve customer experience and security.
