Nigeria’s Nationwide League One (NLO) is implementing mandatory facial verification for all players in its Division One and U19 Youth League, marking a significant technological advancement in the country’s football registration system. The new requirement, which must be completed before a March 30 registration deadline, aims to prevent duplicate registrations and enhance the integrity of player documentation.
The facial verification system will use facial recognition technology to ensure each player is registered with only one club at a time. If the system detects that a player is already registered elsewhere, it will automatically notify the original club via email and require a formal release process before the player can be registered with a new team.
This initiative follows a broader trend of implementing biometric verification in sports and other sectors. Similar to how India’s Digi Yatra system has expanded facial recognition across airports, the NLO’s approach aims to modernize and secure its registration process.
For players already registered, the system will conduct verification checks to confirm their status. Clubs must provide proper documentation for any player transfers, and the NLO administration will review these materials to ensure compliance with the new regulations.
The implementation of this technology represents a significant step forward in Nigerian football administration, aligning with global trends in biometric verification systems across various industries.
