President Abdourahamane Tiani officially launched Niger's biometric national identity card on March 30, 2026, making Niger the second Alliance of Sahel States member to deploy the shared system after Burkina Faso. The polycarbonate cards contain embedded biometric chips, are ICAO-compliant, valid for 10 years, and mandatory for citizens aged 15 and older. The card enables passport-free travel across AES states including Mali and Burkina Faso. The project was delivered under a 15-year public-private concession signed in June 2025, with a Libyan firm contracted for production and a Nigerien company holding the lead role for local production and knowledge transfer. Digital archiving is integrated into civil registration.
