Belgium and the UK both announced postponements to EU Entry/Exit System biometric border checks ahead of the April 10, 2026 full implementation deadline. Belgian testing revealed that technological and infrastructural conditions for biometric registration are not in place, with trial operations causing extended queues at airports. At the UK's Port of Dover and Eurotunnel, fingerprint and facial recognition terminals cannot reliably exchange data with French servers, resulting in a second postponement. The EES, which collects four fingerprints and one facial image from non-EU nationals, has seen a gradual rollout since October 2025, but France has enrolled only about one-third of non-EU travelers against a 50 percent March target. Belgium joins the Netherlands and France among member states delaying implementation.
